THE COUNCIL’S CODE

Six armies. One survivor.

Hex Council has three king-capture variants: the original 127 hex cells, plus two boards of 216 triangles. Hex armies have a king, queen, rook, bishop, knight, and five pawns. Triangle armies have a king, two queens, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and nine pawns. Their back-row order protects every major piece from an immediate opening capture. Join a room, choose a color, then ready up. All six seats are required. To play solo, take a seat, choose Fill empty seats with computers, then ready up. The first seated player hosts the room and can add or remove computers before play starts. The Host badge identifies them; they can transfer hosting to any other seated human at any time.

The pieces

Tap a highlighted cell to try a move.

● Legal move · ♟ Enemy · ♟ Friendly blocker

♜ RookSlides any distance in the six directions through neighboring hex edges.
♝ BishopSlides along the six diagonal lines through hex corners, jumping the cells between diagonal destinations.
♛ QueenCombines the rook’s six edge lines and bishop’s six diagonal lines.
♚ KingMoves one step on an edge line or diagonal line: up to twelve destinations.
♞ KnightJumps two edge steps in one direction, then one step in either adjacent direction. It can jump over pieces.
♟ PawnMoves one hex toward the opposite side, in its army’s original direction. Captures in either adjacent forward direction. Automatically becomes a queen at the far two rows.

Claim the crown

Amber moves first; play continues clockwise through Violet, Jade, Coral, Azure, and Ivory. Capture an enemy king to remove that entire army. A player with no legal moves is eliminated. Resigning removes your army. The last surviving army wins.

There is no check or checkmate: protecting your king is your responsibility. No castling, en passant, or pawn double steps. Eliminated players can stay and chat.

Time controls

The room host can choose no clock, or 15 seconds to 5 minutes per move. The active player’s countdown appears above the board. Every new turn gets the full allowance. When the countdown reaches zero, that turn is skipped and the next player gets their full allowance. The server enforces the deadline, including while a player is disconnected. Changing settings before play clears human ready checks.

Review and explore

Use Left and Right arrow keys, or the board’s arrow buttons, to review saved positions. Return to live before making a move; the live game and clock continue during review. Click any piece to see its possible moves. Blue outlined previews are for learning and cannot move an opponent’s piece. Sound on enables soft move, your-turn, and low-time cues on this device. Existing games begin saving positions from their next action after this update.

Stay at the table

Share the room link with your five friends. Your seat is saved in this browser so you can reconnect after refreshing. The board automatically faces your army. Use ↶ and ↷ to rotate in 60° steps, or Your view to reset. Keep your room code private. Practice mode is local and lets you control all six armies.

Leave the battlefield?
